CHELSEA + ANDREW | WASHINGTON D.C. ENGAGEMENT SESSION PREVIEWS
CHELSEA + ANDREW | WASHINGTON D.C. MINI ENGAGEMENT SESSION, DESTINATION WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
This past weekend we were able to head to Washington D.C. and we couldn't have been more excited! The team absolutely loves a good road trip especially when we are headed to see some amazing couples for their engagement sessions. So, I had actually never been to D.C. and was so happy to hear the cherry blossoms were actually in bloom the weekend we choose to head that way!!!
We decided to head out right after the munchkins got on the bus Friday morning. It was supposed to be a 6 hour trip but it just so happened to put us in D.C. around rush hour... and turns out they think it's totally cool to close all the roads we wanted and send us all over the city. When we FINALLY found our hotel it also just so happened that their computers were down and had to check everyone in the old fashioned way. This was all about an hour before we had a SHOOT! It definitely added a bit of excitement to our trip.
Daniel and I decided to take a cab to meet our couple at the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial. Being that I had ridden in my first cab in New York for our last engagement shoot... I WAS A PRO NOW! We got there with plenty of time to find some awesome spots and in time for Brett and Elle to walk around the entire Tidal Basin because the taxi took them to the wrong monument. OOPS!!!
HOW THEY MET
Date: June 14th, 2012
Location: Ohio State Athletics Practice Fields
Chelsea was an athletic training student during the summer before her senior year. She decided to stay in Columbus that summer to work the summer athletic camps that the Ohio State teams host. The camps are all sponsored by Gatorade, so the job title was both medical coverage provider and rehydration specialist. These camps were therefore affectionately referred to as Gatorade Camps. Chelsea was assigned to one of the first camps of the summer, a football camp.
Andrew was an athletic training student during the summer before his junior year. He decided to stay in Columbus that summer to work Gatorade Camps as well. Andrew was one of the many staff assigned to the first football camp of the summer.
This camp was a hot one, so everyone was a sticky, sweaty mess from a thick layer of sweat and Gatorade powder. While everyone else was perfecting the creation of new colors and flavors of Gatorade, Chelsea was noticing a cute boy. He could lift 10 galloon coolers into the back of a Gator with ease, and his jokes, while plentiful, were terribly corny. They ended up working a station together, when Chelsea brought up one of her favorite TV shows - Community. Andrew was amazed! He loved Community too! Chelsea thought she was being very direct when she invited him over to watch some episodes at her house.
Andrew did not pick up on this, and famously sat on a couch on the opposite side of the room for the entire duration of the night, not a pick up line in sight. (Chelsea still makes fun of him for this.)
The message became clearer as they spent more time together, and they finally went on their first date: dinner and a movie at Wendy's and the dollar theater. It was a fantastic, frosty filled evening. A few dates later, Andrew asked Chelsea to be his girlfriend, and she, heartlessly, said no. (Andrew still makes fun of Chelsea for this) And this narrator agrees that they hadn't known each other long enough yet! It only took Andrew 2 more tries before Chelsea said yes. Third time's a charm!
I LOVE THAT THEY LOVE COMMUNITY AND PARKS and REC.!!!
THE REST OF THE STORY...OR AT LEAST A BIT MORE
Chelsea and Andrew dated for a year, during which Chelsea got accepted to physical therapy school in Seattle, Washington, but Andrew was going to have another year of school at Ohio State to finish. What would the couple do? They decided, well, we do like each other an awful lot, so let's at least give it a shot.
Over the next 3 years Andrew and Chelsea held a long distance relationship, with Chelsea in Seattle and Andrew in Columbus for 1 year, and El Paso, TX for 2 while he got his Master's degree. Distance was rough, but the couple invited a third party into their relationship, Southwest Airlines, and were able to visit each other on all of their school breaks. Chelsea is convinced the couple was a key to the growth and success of Southwest Airlines from 2013 - 2016.
Andrew and Chelsea graduated around the same time in the spring of 2016, and Andrew got a job at Towson University in Towson, MD. Despite their love for the pacific northwest, they decided to embark on a new adventure to the east coast.
We had an absolute blast hanging with these two! From their love for some of my favorite tv shows to Chelsea being a fellow Wisconsinite it truly was so fun laughing with both of them while the sun set. Thanks for coming to D.C. even though I didn't realize Baltimore wasn't quite as close as I had thought. We cannot wait until your wedding day at the Columbus Zoo in July <3
One of our favorite places to go is the Newport Aquarium in Kentucky, just south of Andrew's hometown of Cincinnati. They have shark tunnels and a huge penguin viewing area - what more could you ask for? We were both on Christmas break from grad school, doing our rounds of the country visiting our family all over. While in Cinci for a few days, we of course had to fit in a trip to Newport. We got near the end of the aquarium and into the shark tunnels, where Chelsea likes to spend at least a half an hour, and on this particular day she was entranced by the new addition of a scalloped hammerhead (google it, they're awesome). Andrew was hurrying her a little bit, but Chelsea wouldn't have that, so Andrew waited at the end and Chelsea figured he was just hangry. But when she finally said goodbye to the sharks, Andrew got down on one knee and ask her to keep doing this thing forever! Chelsea just stood there for a solid 30 seconds only saying, "Here? Now? Seriously? Right now? Here?". After the shock, she of course said yes and they proceeded to make out in front of a whole bunch of families trying to leave the exhibit as they awkwardly offered their congratulations. Pure romance.
Brett and I had a good laugh attempting to count in the planes. Turns out they fly out of D.C. almost every 5 minutes or so after 6 PM. We got pretty good at guessing!
